Alternative to Grammarly
Free Grammarly alternative for work messages
Grammarly is still the biggest writing assistant there is, and if you want every field you type in checked as you type, it is still the tool to pay for. If what you pay it for is work messages in Slack, Teams, WhatsApp or Gmail, written in a second language, BetterSend does that part for free: 50 AI actions a month, no card, a draft in any language back as natural English in the tone you picked. It acts only when you click, so it reads nothing while you type, and it never stores what you send.

What changed at Grammarly
- On October 29, 2025 the company changed its name to Superhuman and put Grammarly, the Coda workspace and the Superhuman email app under one brand, with a new assistant, Superhuman Go, built into the Grammarly extension. The writing tool keeps the Grammarly name.
- Pro costs US$ 12 per member a month billed annually, or US$ 30 billed monthly, as of October 2026. The free plan keeps spelling and grammar corrections, a tone detector and 100 AI prompts a month; full-sentence rewrites and one-click tone adjustment are Pro.
- Worldwide, searches for "cancel grammarly subscription" and "grammarly pricing" rose sharply in the 12 months to October 2026, and "grammarly humanizer" and "ai humanizer" appear among the fastest-rising related searches.
- The extension checks text as you type, in every field, on every site it is allowed to run on. Its Chrome Web Store listing asks for access to all sites and reports 40 million users, rated 3.9 out of 5 from 43,200 reviews.
- Grammarly corrects text in the language it is written in: English, plus Spanish, French, Portuguese, German and Italian. Turning a Portuguese draft into an English message is a separate, paid translation step, then editing.
What BetterSend gives you for free
- 50 AI actions a month, every month, with no trial that runs out and no card. Each Improve, Translate or Explain is one action.
- 3 tones (Professional, Friendly, Fix Grammar) and 10 free uses of the Pro tones, to try the others on real messages.
- Write in Portuguese, Spanish or any other language and get natural English back, in one click.
- Translate and Explain on the messages you receive, in 44 languages.
- The desktop app for Mac and Windows puts the same button in the Slack, Teams, WhatsApp and Discord apps, on the same free plan.
- Your message is sent only when you click, never stored and never used to train models.
Where Grammarly is still the better choice
- It checks as you type, everywhere: documents, forms, email, and on iPhone and Android keyboards. BetterSend only acts on a message when you press its button.
- Long documents. It works in Google Docs, Microsoft Word and the desktop apps, with a plagiarism checker and an AI detector on Pro.
- Teams and companies: style guides, brand tones and admin controls that BetterSend does not have.
- If you write a lot of English already and want a safety net under all of it rather than a rewrite of one message, Grammarly is the better fit.
Switch in three steps
- 1
Add BetterSend to Chrome and sign in with your email. The free plan needs no card.
- 2
Open Slack, Teams, WhatsApp Web or Gmail, write the draft in your own language and press Improve.
- 3
For the apps installed on your computer, get BetterSend for Mac or Windows.
Common questions
Is BetterSend a grammar checker like Grammarly?
No. It does not underline mistakes as you type. You write the message, press Improve, pick a tone, and get a corrected, natural version back inside the chat. Grammar fix is one of the 3 free tones.
Can BetterSend turn a draft written in Portuguese or Spanish into English?
Yes, in one action. Write the draft in your own language, choose the tone, and the result comes back in English, or in any of 44 languages you pick. Grammarly corrects the draft in the language it was written in.
What does BetterSend cost compared with Grammarly?
The free plan has 50 AI actions a month and 3 tones, with no card. Pro is $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year with all 13 tones. Grammarly Pro is US$ 12 a month billed annually or US$ 30 billed monthly, as of October 2026.
Does the text I improve sound like it was written by AI?
The rewrite follows rules against the usual signs of AI writing, and it keeps the way you already write: if your draft uses dashes, the result keeps them. It is a message a colleague reads as yours, not a generic rewrite.
