Wordtune only writes in English and has no desktop app; BetterSend also works inside the Slack, Teams, WhatsApp and Discord apps on Mac and Windows.
By Rubens Jr, Founder of BetterSend
Wordtune, from AI21 Labs, rewrites text you select: Rewrite, Formal, Casual, Shorten and Expand, each with several suggestions to choose from. Spices add an example, a counterargument or a fact to a draft, and Wordtune Read summarizes articles, PDFs and videos. It runs as a Chrome and Edge extension, an editor on its website and an iPhone keyboard.
BetterSend is built for work chat in a second language. It adds Improve, Translate and Explain buttons inside twelve work platforms and a desktop app for the native Slack, WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams and Discord apps. Improve takes a draft in any language and returns natural English, or another language you pick, in one of 13 tones; Translate and Explain act on the messages you receive.
BetterSend is for
Non-native English speakers who write work messages in chat all day and want to start from their own language, in a specific tone.
Wordtune is for
People who already write in English and want to polish, shorten or expand what they wrote, or summarize long reading.
| Feature | BetterSend | Wordtune |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Buttons inside Slack, WhatsApp Web, LinkedIn, Gmail, Outlook, Microsoft Teams, GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Jira, Telegram and Discord, plus a desktop app for the native Slack, WhatsApp, Teams and Discord apps on macOS and Windows. | A Chrome and Edge extension that works in text fields on the web, an editor on its website and an iPhone keyboard. Its Mac beta was discontinued (help center, December 2025), there is no Windows or Android app, and its Firefox add-on was last updated in April 2025. |
| Rewriting a message | Improve rewrites the whole draft in one of 13 tones, for example Professional, Diplomatic, Concise, Confident and Native Speaker. | Select text and choose Rewrite, Formal, Casual, Shorten or Expand, then pick one of several suggestions. Formal and Casual are its only tones. |
| Writing in another language | Write the draft in any language and get natural English back in the chosen tone, or pick another output language. | It accepts drafts in 10 languages, including Portuguese, Spanish and Hindi, and always answers in English. It does not write in any other language. |
| Messages you receive | Translate into any of 44 languages and Explain for jargon and idioms, under each received message. | No translate or explain action for a message someone sent you. It summarizes articles, PDFs and videos. |
| Beyond messages | No summarizer and no way to add facts or examples to a draft. | Spices add an example, a counterargument, a definition or a fact to your draft, and the summarizer reads long pages for you. This is where Wordtune is clearly ahead. |
| Free plan | Free plan: 50 actions per month and 3 tones (Professional, Friendly, Grammar fix). | 10 rewrites and AI suggestions per day and 3 summaries per month, per its plans page. |
| Price | Pro is US$ 4.99 per month or US$ 39.99 per year as of October 2026, with all 13 tones and unlimited actions. In Brazil, Pix: 6 months for the price of 4 (R$ 99.60). | Advanced is US$ 6.99 per month billed yearly or US$ 13.99 monthly; Unlimited is US$ 9.99 per month billed yearly or US$ 19.99 monthly, as of October 2026. Its plans page also showed lower promotional prices. |
| Privacy | Message text is never stored; only metadata such as the action type and token count. Nothing is sent on your behalf; you always choose what to send. | Each rewrite sends the selected text and the whole text field as context. Its privacy policy says it collects the text you use in the service and keeps it until it is deleted. |
| Recent activity | The extension and the desktop app were both updated in October 2026. | Rated 3.3 out of 5 from 2,400 reviews on the Chrome Web Store, with 1 million users. Its blog has had no new post since July 2024. |
Verdict
If you already write in English and want a fast way to polish, shorten or expand text, or to summarize what you read, Wordtune does more of that, and its free plan gives more rewrites a day. If you think in another language and write work messages in chat, BetterSend is the closer fit: it starts from your own language, has 13 tones instead of two, reads the messages you receive and works in the desktop chat apps, at half the price of Wordtune Unlimited billed yearly.
