BetterSend vs Built-in translation and workspace bots
Translate Slack and Teams messages without an admin
Slack translates the messages you receive only on its Business+ and Enterprise+ plans, Microsoft Teams translates them unless an admin has turned the option off, and translation bots such as Translate Channels, Vorbee and Lingvanex need an admin to install them in the workspace. None of them translates the reply you are writing. BetterSend is installed by you alone, in Chrome or on your computer: it translates and explains what you receive and rewrites your reply in natural English, in a tone you pick, on any plan.
By Rubens Jr, Founder of BetterSend
Slack and Teams both translate messages now, with conditions. Slack's translation is one of its AI features, and its help center lists it on Business+ and Enterprise+ only; the translation is shown only to you. Teams translates received messages, can do it automatically, skips short messages, and its help page tells you to contact your IT admin if the option is missing. Copilot in Teams rewrites a draft and adjusts its tone and length with a Microsoft Copilot license; its help page describes no translation of the draft.
Translation bots are apps an admin adds to the workspace. Translate Channels adds the translation directly into each message for the whole channel, at US$ 5 per active user a month. Vorbee translates channel messages on its own or when someone reacts with a flag, at US$ 9.99 a month for 200,000 characters. Lingvanex adds automatic channel translation and a command, free up to 20,000 characters a month and US$ 49 a month for up to 50 users.
BetterSend is for
One person who reads and writes in a second language at work and cannot, or does not want to, ask an admin or change the company plan.
Built-in translation and workspace bots is for
A company that wants every member to read every channel in several languages, with an admin to set it up and a budget per seat or per character.
| Feature | BetterSend | Built-in translation and workspace bots |
|---|---|---|
| Who installs it | You do, in Chrome or on your Mac or Windows computer. No admin and no workspace app. | Slack and Teams translation come with the plan and the admin settings. Bots are installed in the workspace by an admin. |
| Plan required | Any Slack or Teams plan, Free included. | Slack: Business+ or Enterprise+. Teams: included, unless an admin turns it off. Copilot rewriting: a Microsoft Copilot license. |
| Messages you receive | Translate and Explain under each message, only on your screen, in 44 languages. | Slack and Teams show a translation only to you. Translate Channels and Vorbee add the translation for the whole channel to see. |
| The reply you write | Improve rewrites your draft from any language into natural English, in one of 13 tones, before you send it. | Slack and Teams translation do not touch your draft. Copilot in Teams rewrites tone and length; its help page describes no translation. Bots translate after you send. |
| Who sees it | Only you. Your reply goes out as a normal message from you. | Built-in translation is private to you. Channel bots add translations everyone in the channel sees. |
| Desktop apps | The BetterSend desktop app works in the installed Slack and Teams apps on Mac and Windows. | Built-in translation works in the desktop apps. Bots run in the workspace, so their translations show wherever Slack does. |
| Free plan | Free plan: 50 actions per month and 3 tones (Professional, Friendly, Grammar fix). | Vorbee: a trial of 30,000 characters. Lingvanex: free up to 20,000 characters a month, as of October 2026. |
| Price | Pro is US$ 4.99 per month or US$ 39.99 per year as of October 2026, with all 13 tones and unlimited actions. In Brazil, Pix: 6 months for the price of 4 (R$ 99.60). | Translate Channels: US$ 5 per active user a month. Vorbee: US$ 9.99 a month for 200,000 characters. Lingvanex: US$ 49 a month up to 50 users, US$ 99 up to 300, as of October 2026. |
| Privacy | Message text is never stored; only metadata such as the action type and token count. Nothing is sent on your behalf; you always choose what to send. | Built-in translation stays with Slack or Microsoft. A bot reads the channels it is added to, with the permissions the admin grants. |
Verdict
If your company already pays for Slack Business+ or has Teams translation on, use it for reading: it costs you nothing and it is private. If a whole multilingual team needs every channel translated, a bot set up by an admin is the right tool. If you are one person writing in a second language, on any plan, BetterSend is the one you can install today without asking anyone, and the only one here that rewrites your reply before you send it.
Common questions
Can I translate Slack messages on the free plan?
Slack's own translation is not on Free or Pro; its help center lists it on Business+ and Enterprise+. The BetterSend Chrome extension and desktop app work on any Slack plan.
Do I need an admin to use BetterSend?
No. You install it in Chrome or on your computer. Nothing is added to the workspace and nothing is posted in the channel.
Does Copilot in Teams translate my message?
Its help page describes rewriting a draft and adjusting tone and length, not translating it, and it needs a Microsoft Copilot license. BetterSend turns a draft in your language into English in one step.
