Immersive Translate is a bilingual reading tool. It shows a translation under each paragraph of a web page, translates PDFs, ebooks, images and video subtitles, and lets you choose among many translation services and AI models. It also translates the text in an input box: type your draft, press the space bar three times, and the box is replaced with the translation. Its Chrome Web Store listing reports 3 million users.

BetterSend is built for the other half of a conversation at work. In Slack, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp Web, Discord, Gmail and seven more sites, and in the desktop apps on Mac and Windows, it adds Improve to the message box and Translate and Explain to each message you receive. Improve does not translate word for word: it rewrites the draft as a native speaker would send it, in the tone you pick, and you read it before it replaces your draft.

Verdict

If you read in another language more than you write, Immersive Translate is the better tool, and its free plan covers a lot of reading. If your problem is the reply, a work message that has to sound natural and polite in English, BetterSend writes it in the chat, in the tone you choose, including in the Slack, Teams and WhatsApp desktop apps. They act on different text and run side by side.
